The castle was completely renovated and became the official royal residence from 1139, when Portugal became independent from the spanish Kingdom of León.

Puebla de Sanabria is a town in the Spanish province of Zamora (Castilla y León), near the Portuguese border.
It is a very old town, documented since the
seventh century (Swabian and Visigothic periods). It has an important architectural heritage, which include the castle of the Counts of Benavente, built in the fifteenth century, and the church of Nuestra Señora del Azogue, built in the twelfth century in Romanesque style.

Chaves is the ancient Roman Aquae Flaviae. In those days was a city spa. Today it still is.

King John's Castle in Limerick

King John's Castle is located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon.

This castle, built on the orders of King John and bearing his name, was completed around 1200.

The walls, towers and fortifications remain today, and are a visitor attraction. The remains of a Viking settlement (see the photo) were uncovered during the construction of a visitor centre at the site.

Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle (Ireland) is a castle built in 1195 by William Marshal, to control a fording-point of the River Nore and the junction of several routeways. It was a symbol of Norman occupation and in its original thirteenth-century condition it would have formed an important element of the defences of the town with four large circular corner towers.
